- More than 70 people have been shot dead by the police during riots by NASA supporters against the repeat election
- Civil society group ELOG claims there have also been over 60 cases of sexual violence during the poll period
- NASA supporters have been rioting against the fresh election which was held on Thursday,October 27
The repeat election has so far claimed more than 70 lives while over 60 cases of sexual violence have been reported, a civil society group has claimed.
According to the Elections Observation Group(ELOG), scores of people have also been injured while property worth millions of shillings has been destroyed.
The deaths have been as a result of violent confrontation between protesters and security forces.
“There are also allegations that militia groups and other vigilantes could have been responsible for a small portion of the deaths. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the state to protect citizens and their property,” said ELOG in a statement on Friday, October 27.
The number of deaths however contradicts that of the police who say, so far, only four people have been killed since the election began.
On the other hand,TUKO.co.ke has documented at least 10 deaths so far including those of minors and adults.
ELOG added that with the deaths and injuries reported following the divisive poll, it would be an uphill task bringing Kenyans to embrace nationhood and live as one people.
There have been running battles between NASA supporters and anti-riot police after their leader Raila Odinga called for a boycott of the election.
This forced the IEBC to postpone the fresh election in four Opposition counties to a later date due to violence and animosity towards its officials.
Voting in Siaya, Migori, Kisumu and Homabay, was scheduled for Saturday, October 28 but was again postponed indefinitely.
ELOG also noted that there were mixed outcomes in the voting process where in the main Opposition strongholds, very little activity was recorded in polling stations while in Jubilee strongholds, voting was characterized by good turnouts and long queues.
