Our phones are a huge part of our lives
We do practically everything on these mini computers, and as great as they are they can also be really disastrous to our health. Here are some ways your phone can harm you:
1. Eye strains
Whenever you spend more than a few hours staring at your phone, you risk dry eyes from blinking less, headaches, blurred vision, and general eyestrain. Looking into the distance every 20 minutes and blinking frequently can help.
2. It could make you feel depressed
Frequent use of social media can make you feel like your life is terrible. People only post the best parts of their life and it can make you feel sad and depressed. Being bombarded by images of everyone looking happy and successful leads to unhealthy and inaccurate comparisons and decreased feelings of self-worth.
3. It can trigger nomophobia
Nomophobia is the fear of being without your phone. It can lead you to have panic attacks if you don’t have your phone with you. To get over this fear, try and spend little amounts of time without your phone, after all, people survived without phones years ago.
4. It can cause neck and upper back pain
A couple hours of hunching over your smartphone can trigger discomfort beginning with pain in the back of the neck and shoulders.
5. It increases your risk of potentially fatal accidents.
Phone screens are a huge distraction to drivers and walkers alike. You probably text while walking or driving. This can lead to painful accidents.
6. Risk of cancer
Many scientists have warned over time that there is the possibility that prolonged use of cell phones can cause brain tumours to develop in a person. Cell phones make use of a high radio frequency to work effectively. The World Health Organization (WHO) in its recent reports states that this electromagnetic radio frequency given off by mobile phones can possibly cause cancer in humans. It is believed that when you hold the phone against your ear during a call, this frequency can cause gradual damage to your brain. This damage is in the form of a tumor growing in the brain.
7. Bacteria
Did you know that your phone contains ten times more bacteria than a toilet seat?! Next time, be careful where you leave your phone, and wipe it regularly.
8. Memory loss
With a smartphone handy, there’s no reason to memorize things you know you can easily look up — like phone numbers. And when you stop memorizing facts and figures, your memory can get a little rusty.
